History of sumo
The history of the sport of sumo has a long and distinguished one. It was first developed in Japan, where it is known as jio-toshiyori-WAISEEe.
The term sumo is derived from the term for wrestling in Japanese, yōshin-no-mashii. Thus, wrestling in sumo is called yōshin-no-mashii kumiai, or simple wrestling with a horse.
This kind of wrestling is thought to have been practiced long before humans domesticated it as a livestock feed. Ancient Sumo Histories state that when horses were first introduced to Japan, they did not last very long before they were hunted down and fathered by one of the new species of humans that arrived on the scene.
The current form of the sport was developed in 1879 by rules put forward by the New Yokagake Association for Amateur Sports Purposes, or Yokagake Association for short.
Rules of sumo
In a sumo show, a performer uses a set of rules to decide how a person should be treated. These rules can range from simple to apply to everyone in the audience, to very specific for one type of audience.
The first two categories of rules are usually referred to as etiquette and considered strictly social. Etiquette rules determine how people should address each other, what kind of things they may or may not speak about, and whether or not they may touch or be touched.
Mostly harmless touches such as patting someone on the back are allowed while etiquette prevents completely inappropriate behavior such as sexual misconduct or nudity.
Types of matches
There are several types of sumo, and each has a different set of moves. New to theuan? Try our easy guide for finding your first bout!
Makoto fought in the juban, which are more like shorts. He was very tall, so his matches were in the rosandegon class.
The hansa were the jackets worn by the rankers in a match. The hansa are always white, and rankers wear it even when not training.
The sanda were those who battled in the ingroup, or those who did not participate in a match but watched from the sidelines.
Famous wrestlers
At sumo shows, you’re bound to run into some of your favorite wrestlers. They’re at the show! Let’s get together and watch them compete in the tent!
There are many events held around the world every day of the year. Some focus on a specific wrestler, while others don’t pay attention to year-long coverage.
For example, there is a January event focused on John Cena, and a July event focused on Roman Reigns. There are many more than that, too.
Since they have no obligations to date or cover an event for years on end, they can make very impressive appearances. Many keep social media accounts so they can continue to grow their fan base.
Wrestlers take their careers very seriously, so being asked to appear at a show is not taken lightly.
A visit to a sumo arena is a must for all tourists
While only one sport exists for a sumo competitor, fighting in general is at the very core of what it means to be a warrior.
As you would expect, being able to fight and win at the arena is an important part of being a warrior. Being able to navigate your way through a match in the arena is another important part of being a warrior.
For example, during my visit to Sumo Hall, I was especially impressed with how skilled some of the senior wrestlers were.
How to watch a match
Most sumo tournaments are held in the middle of the year, usually around January-February. This is because the male competitors are training during that time!
If you’re not a fan of wrestling, you can still watch the matches. Ringling Brothers and World chain stores now offer streaming services that allow you to watch the match without being involved in the combat.
You will need to purchase your service package at least a month in advance of the event, so plan your arrival a little early! You will need to get your gear set up and ready an hour before the first match starts so that all of your athletes are adequately prepared.
What to wear?
When heading off to Sumo Show Osaka, the first thing to know is what style you are supposed to wear. It is recommended that you try on a couple of dresses or shorts before you make your decision.
There are a few popular looks at present. One is a cute and relaxed dress with soft patterns and lots of detail. The other is a heavy leather dress with lots of steel and exposed hardware. Both look great!
Another look that is very popular is a leather A-line skirt with high boots. This looks great together or without! There are also some dresses which are just white, so you can say that there is no dress type barred!
Bullet point: Where to see all the action?
The main event at Sumo Show Osaka every year is the sumo matches. These are races where someone has to be on top for a set amount of seconds to win! If you do not dress in combat gear, you will be looked down upon and punished for your team.
